After a 5 year apprenticeship in Edinburgh (1967 – 1972), I worked in the city gaining experience in all aspects of the trade. I came to New Zealand to be nearer my grandchildren. After travelling around the country looking at options I chose Dunedin. It was quite different to anywhere else in New Zealand probably due to the Scottish heritage, wonderful atmosphere, friendly people and a vibrant art and theatre culture.
I worked in Mosgiel for four years but realised there was a good demand for our services in Dunedin. A lot of jewellery design, manufacturing, recycling, remodelling and repair work was being sent to Christchurch, Wellington and even Auckland. I have over 40 years’ experience as a manufacturing jeweller and the best thing about my trade is seeing the satisfied look on the faces of our customers when we have transformed their jewellery. |
